CANNAVARO CHANGES TUNE ON CASSANO

Barely days after advising Antonio Cassano to stay on and fight, Real Madrid's Fabio Cannavaro now believes that a return to Italy "would be better" for the forward.

Less than a week ago, Cannavaro had advised Cassano to stay put and fight despite the lack of action on the pitch.

"I think he should not think about leaving and fight for a place," the Golden Ball winner had said. "Antonio came here to be an important player for Real Madrid."

However, the inevitable seems to be round the corner, and perhaps getting wind of the mood following yesterday's emergency meeting at the Bernabeu, the Italy skipper has advised his compatriot to return home in order to see regular action.

"I hope that Antonio can return [to Italy], because he is a quality player and must play regularly," said Cannavaro from Rome, where he had travelled to attend a function.

As for the crisis at Real, he insisted it was "just a passing phase," and that Los Merengues would be back to their best in no time. There was little talk of the criticism from Capello on Sunday evening, when the coach had singled out Cannavaro's poor Real Madrid form.

The Golden Ball winner went on to suggest that he could even return to play in Italy after his three year spell at Real Madrid.
