Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro is against the concept of using the Stadio Olimpico in Rome as a permanent home game venue.
Italian Olympic Committee chief Gianni Petrucci floated the idea after 60,000 fans turned up for Saturday’s 2-0 win over the Ukraine.
But Cannavaro has this evening insisted that the Azzurri belong to the whole of Italy and not just one city.
“I don’t think it would be a workable idea,” said the former Napoli, Parma, Inter and Juventus stopper.
“It just wouldn’t be right to use the Stadio Olimpico out of respect for the other towns and cities in the country,” added the Real Madrid man.
“After all, how can the fans in Reggio Calabria for example be expected to reach the capital every time an international is on?”
Although some other countries have just one national arena, Cannavaro insists the size of Italy is a deciding factor in why the team must continue to travel around the peninsula.
“You can’t compare us to other nations, especially as some countries are only 200km in length,” he concluded.
