21-11-2007 ITALY - FAROE ISLANDS

MODENA, Italy (AP) - Luca Toni and Giorgio Chiellini scored a goal each Wednesday to help Italy beat the Faeroe Islands 3-1 in a European Championship qualifier.

Toni made it 2-0 in the 36th minute, flicking up the ball and volleying it into the net from close range. Chiellini scored five minutes later with a powerful shot from distance.

San Marino defender Frodi Benjaminsen deflected the ball into his own net in the 11th minute for the game's opening goal after trying to cut out Massimo Oddo's pass for Toni.

Rogvi Jacobsen, who was San Marino's best player, headed in an 83rd-minute consolation for the visitors.

Italy, which had already qualified for next year's tournament along with France, finished at the top of Group B with 29 points. San Marino was last with no points.

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni rotated his squad after securing qualification by beating Scotland 2-1 on Saturday.

Marco Amelia replaced Gianluigi Buffon in goal, Oddo and Fabio Grosso returned to flank the defense, and 23-year-old Raffaele Palladino made his debut on the left wing in a new 4-2-3-1 formation.

After forcing the first goal, Oddo almost provided the assist for another in the 16th. But Toni was unfortunate to head the defender's free kick onto the post.

Italy continued to press and Toni, who scored one goal and set up another against Scotland, was denied by Faeroese defender Jon Jacobsen from close range.

The Faeroe Islands thought they had equalized in the 35th, when Christian Jacobsen bundled the ball into the net but it was disallowed for a foul.

Toni scored a minute later at Modena's Alberto Braglia stadium, where he began his professional career.

Chiellini, who gave a mature display alongside Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro in central defense, seemed surprised when his speculative shot from 30 meters (yards) sailed into the top right corner of the visitor's net. It was his first international goal.

The Faeroe Islands deserved their goal for a tenacious display and it was fitting that Jacobsen, who showed enterprise on and off the ball, should score it.

Cannavaro made his 113th appearance for Italy to become the nation's second-most capped player behind former captain Paolo Maldini, who played 126 times for the Azzurri before retiring in 2002.
