15-11-2006 ITALY - TURKEY (FRIENDLY MATCH)

BERGAMO, Italy (AP) - Half-strength Italy was held to a 1-1 draw by Turkey in a friendly Wednesday, with both goals coming from mishaps.

Antonio Di Natale put Italy ahead in the 39th minute, taking advantage of an error by substitute goalkeeper Volkan Demirel.

Demirel had the ball in his hands and slipped as he was about to kick it upfield. The ball trickled right to Di Natale and the Udinese forward easily scored his second goal in eight appearances.

Three minutes later, an own-goal by Marco Materazzi leveled the game.

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro lost the ball in the area and Ibrahim Uzulmez sent in a cross from the left flank that Materazzi redirected in on a futile clearing attempt.

"It's strange, but every now and then that happens in soccer," Italy coach Roberto Donadoni said of the goals. "We faced a top-level opponent that made us struggle in certain situations. It was a good test."

Italy was without several regulars, either through injury or simply for rest. Among the missing for the world champions were Luca Toni, Alessandro Del Piero, Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso and Fabio Grosso.

Italy is now 2-2-2 since winning its fourth World Cup title in July.

Donadoni used his entire roster and made nine substitutions, including Marco Amelia for Gianluigi Buffon in goal at halftime.

Turkey removed captain Hakan Sukur for the final half hour and replaced eight players in all.

"Apart from one or two players, we're a fairly young team," Turkey coach Fatih Terim said. "As each game goes by we get better though, and it won't be long before we're able to beat Italy."

Terim singled out 19-year-old left winger Arda Turan for praise after his fifth cap.

"I know him well from when I was at Galatasaray," Terim said. "He's a great talent and he's getting better every day. "

Three players made their Italy debuts - Cristian Brocchi and Alberto Aquilani in midfield and Emiliano Bonazzoli at forward.

Italy trails Scotland and France in Group B of European Championship qualifying. The Azzurri's next group game is against Scotland in March. Turkey has a perfect nine points atop Group C.

Italy threatened first when Alberto Gilardino put a volley on target in the sixth minute that was tipped over the bar by Turkey goalkeeper Rustu Recber.

Recber made his 113th international appearance but exited with a knee injury in the ninth minute. He was replaced by Demirel, his teammate at Fenerbahce.

In the 36th, Schalke midfielder Hamit Altintop put an angled shot in on Italy's goal that Buffon calmly caught in front of the post.

Gilardino had another chance just before halftime on a set up from Di Natale, but the AC Milan striker shot wide from an angle.

In the second half, Gianluca Zambrotta was set up well by Di Natale in the 49th but shot wide from beyond the area.

Uzulmez had a chance in the 53rd from a tough angle and hit the outside of the net. Two minutes later, Tuncay Sanli's bicycle kick from the edge of the area also missed the target.

Bonazzoli and Tommaso Rocchi led Italy's attack for the final 30 minutes but Italy's best chance to win late was a long-distance drive by Daniele De Rossi.

Italy remained unbeaten against Turkey in 10 meetings - with seven wins and three draws.

The match was played in Bergamo to honor former Italy captain Giacinto Facchetti, who died in September. Facchetti was from Bergamo, as is Donadoni.

Before the game, Facchetti's former teammate Tarcisio Burgnich presented Facchetti's widow Giovanna with a jersey. A few members of Italy's team visited Facchetti's grave site Tuesday.
