A new experience for me, says Cannavaro
ABU DHABI — Attending the draw for the 18th Arabian Gulf Cup last night was a new experience for the World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro.
“I have never attended a ceremony like the one tonight for the Gulf Cup draw and it’s the first time I have travelled to this region. I’m glad I made it because it’s a new experience for me and if I find time, I’ll try to make it to the opening ceremony,” said the Italian captain at a Press conference.
Cannavaro said winning the world cup was the greatest achievement in his playing career. “It would be hard to sink on any footballer. We worked very hard and stayed focused throughout the world cup campaign.” The 33-year-old central defender who crossed over from Italian giants Juventus to Spain’s Real Madrid said the African and Arab teams were not far off from European and South American standards. “From what I see, they seem to be improving all the time. It won’t be long before an African team wins the World Cup.
“Football is a world game and the gulf between the established nations and the developing countries keeps on closing so much so, it has become very tough.”
Cannavaro named Brazilian striker Ronaldo as the most dangerous to have on the opposite side and Italy will bounce back after losing to France in the aftermath of their success.
“It was tough to come after the break but I’m confident Italy can regroup and win again.”
