Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello believes that nobody deserves the Golden Ball more than Fabio Cannavaro.
Capello insisted that Cannavaro had been the best player during the World Cup, and deserved the award every bit.
"This year, the World Cup was the biggest competition, and if we consider all the games and all the players, Cannavaro has been the number one," said Capello.
"A World Cup, that comes once in four years, is where the best of the world come together, and it is necessary to give it due importance.
"For what Cannavaro has done, he deserves it."
Capello also played down the incessant urge to hand the award to a more attacking player: "It is not significant that he is a defender and not a forward, because in World Cup, the forwards have not done a lot.
"Goal-keepers have stood out, and defenders too, but there were no forwards that did something extraordinary."
While that might be stretching it a bit, the fact remains that Cannavaro was one of the best players during the World Cup. But will the experts who vote be able to shed their pro-attack inclinations?
